Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Ravi is serving a 5-year prison sentence for robbery. While he is still in prison, he is convicted of a separate crime of fraud, which he committed before the robbery, and is sentenced to 3 years in prison for the fraud. According to Section 427(1) of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, Ravi's 3-year sentence for fraud will start after he completes his 5-year sentence for robbery, unless the court specifically orders that the sentences should run concurrently. If the court orders the sentences to run concurrently, Ravi will serve both sentences at the same time, meaning he will spend a total of 5 years in prison.

Example 2:

Sita is serving a life sentence for murder. While serving this sentence, she is convicted of another crime, kidnapping, and is sentenced to 10 years in prison for the kidnapping. According to Section 427(2) of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, Sita's 10-year sentence for kidnapping will run concurrently with her life sentence for murder. This means that Sita will continue to serve her life sentence, and the 10-year sentence will not extend her time in prison beyond the life sentence.
