Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Scenario: Rajesh, a resident of Mumbai, is required to appear in court as a witness in a criminal case.

  1. Issuance of Summons: The court issues a summons for Rajesh to appear on a specific date.
  2. Service by Police Officer: A police officer from the local police station is assigned to serve the summons to Rajesh.
  3. Personal Service: The police officer visits Rajesh's residence and personally hands over one of the duplicates of the summons to Rajesh.
  4. Acknowledgment: Rajesh is asked to sign a receipt on the back of the other duplicate of the summons to acknowledge that he has received it.
  5. Completion: The police officer returns the signed duplicate to the court as proof of service.

Example 2:

Scenario: Priya, a business owner in Delhi, is summoned to court for a civil dispute.

  1. Issuance of Summons: The court issues a summons for Priya to appear in court.
