Explanation using Example

Imagine a woman named Priya is convicted of a capital crime and sentenced to death. After the sentence is passed, it is discovered during a medical examination that Priya is pregnant. On learning of Priya's pregnancy, her lawyer files a petition to the High Court. The High Court, upon confirming the pregnancy, invokes Section 416 of The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. As a result, the court commutes Priya's death sentence to life imprisonment, in accordance with the law, which mandates the commutation to protect the life of the unborn child.
