Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where John is arrested by the police for alleged theft. As per Section 50A of The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, the arresting officer is required to immediately inform someone from John's family, or a friend, or any other person John nominates, about his arrest and the location where he is being detained.

Once at the police station, the officer must make John aware of his right to have someone informed about his arrest. The officer then records the details of whom they have informed about John's arrest in a register maintained at the police station.

When John is presented before a Magistrate, the Magistrate must verify that the police have indeed informed someone as per John's nomination about his arrest, and that this has been properly recorded as per the law.
