Explanation using Example

Imagine a shopkeeper is convicted of selling counterfeit products. The case is heard by a Chief Judicial Magistrate. The evidence is clear and the shopkeeper is found guilty. The Chief Judicial Magistrate decides to sentence the shopkeeper to imprisonment. According to Section 29(1) of The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, the Chief Judicial Magistrate can sentence the shopkeeper to a maximum of seven years in prison, as the law does not permit him to impose a sentence of death, life imprisonment, or imprisonment exceeding seven years for this offense.
