Explanation using Example
Imagine Sarah has been granted a period of 15 days by the court to file a response to a legal notice she received. Due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical emergency, she is unable to meet this deadline. Sarah can apply to the court for an extension of time to submit her response. Considering her situation, the court has the discretion to extend the deadline by up to 30 days in total. This means that even though the original 15-day period has expired, the court can still grant Sarah additional time to fulfill her obligation.
