Applicable Section: Section 231

Offence: Giving or fabricating false evidence with intent to procure conviction of an offence punishable with imprisonment for life or with imprisonment for 7 years, or upwards.

Punishment: The same as for the offence (in this case, life imprisonment or imprisonment for 7 years or more).

Legal Outcome: Ramesh is found guilty of fabricating false evidence. He faces the same punishment that Suresh would have faced if convicted based on the false evidence.

Example 2:

Scenario: Priya, a government official, is aware of a colleague, Anil, who has committed a crime punishable by death. To protect Anil, Priya destroys key documents that could serve as evidence in the investigation.

Applicable Section: Section 238(a)

Offence: Causing disappearance of evidence of an offence committed, or giving false information touching it to screen the offender, if a capital offence.

Punishment: Imprisonment for 7 years and fine.
