Explanation using Example

Imagine the President of India is due to complete their term on July 24th. According to Article 62(1) of the Indian Constitution, the election process to choose the next President must be finalized before July 24th, ensuring that there is no gap in the occupancy of the Presidential office.

In another scenario, if the sitting President unfortunately passes away on January 10th, Article 62(2) mandates that an election to fill this sudden vacancy must occur as quickly as possible, but no later than July 10th, which is six months from the date of the vacancy. The newly elected President will then serve a full five-year term, despite the previous President's term being cut short.
