Explanation using Example

Imagine the President of India is accused of violating the constitution. To initiate impeachment proceedings, at least one-fourth of the members of either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha must sign a notice. Let's say 150 members of the Lok Sabha sign such a notice, given they have given a 14-day advance notice.

The Lok Sabha then debates and votes on the resolution. If at least two-thirds of the total members (i.e., 363 out of 545 members) vote in favor, the charge is formally preferred and sent to the Rajya Sabha for investigation.

The Rajya Sabha forms a committee to investigate the charges against the President, during which the President has the right to present his case. After the investigation, the Rajya Sabha holds a vote. If at least two-thirds of its total members (i.e., 163 out of 245 members) vote to sustain the charge, the President is removed from office immediately.
