The Uttaranchal (Alteration of Name) Act, 2006

The Uttaranchal (Alteration of Name) Act, 2006 was passed by the Indian Parliament to change the name of the state of Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand. The Act also made changes to various other laws and documents to reflect the new name of the state. The Act was passed in response to a long-standing demand from the people of the state, who felt that the name Uttaranchal did not reflect the cultural and geographical identity of the region. The Act came into effect on January 1, 2007.
