Summary
The Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000 was enacted to provide for the reorganization of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh into the separate states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The act established provisions for the separation of assets, liabilities, and personnel between the two states, as well as for the transfer of power and functions from the existing government of Uttar Pradesh to the two new governments. The act also made provisions for the establishment of high courts for the two new states, and for the continuation of existing laws and jurisdiction until new laws were enacted. The act was passed by the Indian Parliament in December 2000 and came into effect on 9 November 2000.
