The Stage-Carriages Act, 1861 was enacted to regulate the use of stage carriages, i.e., carriages used for the conveyance of passengers for hire or reward. The act lays down the conditions under which a stage carriage permit may be granted, the obligations of the owner and driver of the carriage, and the penalties for contravening the provisions of the act. The act also provides for the appointment of transport authorities to implement the provisions of the act and settle disputes arising under it. The act has been amended several times, and the latest amendment was in 1982.
