Imagine a couple, John and Priya, who decide to get married under The Special Marriage Act, 1954. They submit their marriage notice to the Marriage Officer on January 1st. However, due to some personal reasons, they are unable to solemnize their marriage within the next three months, by March 31st. According to Section 14 of The Special Marriage Act, their notice and all related proceedings are now deemed to have lapsed. If they still wish to marry, they must submit a new notice to the Marriage Officer and start the process again.
