The Prisons Act, 1894

The Prisons Act, 1894 was enacted to regulate the management and administration of prisons in India. It defines the duties and responsibilities of prison officers, provides for the separation of different classes of prisoners, and lays down rules for their treatment and discipline. The Act also establishes the role of visitors to prisons and empowers the government to make rules for the regulation of prisons. The Act has been amended several times, with the latest amendment being in 2019.
