Summary
The Orphanages and other Charitable Homes (Supervision and Control) Act, 1960 was enacted to provide for the supervision and control of orphanages and charitable homes in India. The Act defines an orphanage or a charitable home as any institution which is established for the reception and care of destitute, neglected or abandoned children, or for the reception and care of destitute or neglected women, or for the care of sick or infirm persons, or for the relief of destitute or homeless persons. The Act lays down the minimum standards of care to be provided to the children, women, and other persons residing in such institutions, including provisions for food, clothing, medical care, and education. It also provides for the appointment of inspectors to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Act. Any person who contravenes the provisions of the Act is liable to imprisonment and/or fine.
