Summary
The North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971 was enacted to reorganize the states and territories in Northeast India. The Act provided for the establishment of new states and the reorganization of the existing ones, in order to promote better administration and socio-economic development in the region. The Act created the states of Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura, and also made changes to the boundaries of Assam and Nagaland. The Act also provided for the establishment of autonomous districts and regional councils in the Northeast, to promote the welfare of the tribal communities living in the area. The Act has been amended several times since its enactment, to further refine the process of reorganization and to address various administrative and legal issues.
