Summary
The National Waterways Act, 2016 was enacted by the Parliament of India to provide for the regulation, development and management of national waterways in India. The Act aims to promote the use of waterways for transportation of goods and passengers, and to provide for the development and maintenance of infrastructure required for this purpose. The Act establishes the National Waterways Authority of India (NWAI) as the principal agency responsible for the implementation of the Act. The NWAI is responsible for the development and maintenance of the national waterways, as well as for regulating traffic and ensuring safety on these waterways. The Act also provides for the collection of tolls and fees for the use of national waterways.
