Summary

The National Commission for Women Act, 1990 was enacted by the Parliament of India to establish the National Commission for Women. The Commission is responsible for safeguarding and promoting the rights of women in India, and for reviewing the constitutional and legal safeguards for women. The Commission also investigates and examines matters relating to the non-implementation of laws enacted to provide protection to women, and recommends measures to the Government for effective implementation of such laws. The Act empowers the Commission to receive complaints and grievances from individuals or associations, and to take suo moto notice of matters relating to the deprivation of women's rights. The Commission also conducts research on issues affecting women and promotes awareness of their rights and safeguards. The Act provides for the appointment of a Chairperson and Members of the Commission, and sets out their functions and powers.
