Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where a traffic officer is conducting a routine check on a busy road and signals a driver to pull over. The driver, however, decides to ignore the officer's signal and continues driving. This act of wilfully disobeying the officer's lawful direction falls under Section 179(1) of The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. As a result, the driver could face a penalty of up to two thousand rupees for this offence.

In another instance, a vehicle owner is asked by the transport authority to provide the registration details of their vehicle. The owner knowingly provides false information regarding the vehicle's registration. This act of supplying false information is covered under Section 179(2) of the Act. Consequently, the vehicle owner could be subject to imprisonment for up to one month, a fine of up to two thousand rupees, or both.
