Summary
The Kazis Act, 1880 was enacted to regulate the office of Kazi, who was a judicial officer with jurisdiction over the Muslim community. The Act provided for the appointment, removal, and jurisdiction of Kazis in certain parts of India. It also prescribed the duties and powers of the Kazis and laid down the procedure for the settlement of disputes related to marriage, inheritance, and other matters within the Muslim community. The Act was later amended to extend its application to the whole of India and to provide for the appointment of additional Kazis in areas with a substantial Muslim population.
