Imagine a scenario where a couple, John and Mary, have been entrusted with the care of their 8-year-old nephew, Timmy, while his parents are abroad. One day, a neighbor notices that Timmy is often left alone at home for long hours, appears underfed, and has bruises on his arms. Concerned, the neighbor reports the situation to the authorities. Upon investigation, it is discovered that John and Mary have been neglecting Timmy's basic needs and physically punishing him for minor misbehaviors.

Under Section 75 of The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, John and Mary could be charged for their actions. If found guilty, they might face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of one lakh rupees, or both, for wilfully neglecting and assaulting Timmy, thereby causing him mental and physical suffering.
