Summary

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 was introduced in the Indian Parliament on 5 August 2019 and received Presidential assent on 9 August 2019. The Act reorganised the existing Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Prior to this reorganisation, Jammu and Kashmir had been a state in the Republic of India since 1954, with its own Constitution and flag. The Act also repealed the special status granted to the state under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which had given it a measure of autonomy over its own affairs. The Act was controversial and sparked protests in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere in India.
