Explanation using Example

Let's consider a hypothetical scenario to understand Section 69A of The Information Technology Act, 2000. Imagine a social media platform that hosts a group promoting violence and anti-national sentiments. This group is inciting its followers to commit acts that threaten the sovereignty and integrity of India, and is thereby causing a threat to public order.

In this case, the Central Government, upon being satisfied of the necessity, can issue an order to the social media platform (considered as an intermediary) to block access to this group's information for the public. This decision would be recorded in writing and carried out following the prescribed procedure and safeguards. If the social media platform fails to comply with this order, it could face imprisonment up to seven years and also be liable to a fine as per sub-section (3).
