Explanation using Example

Imagine a scenario where a person named John Doe, uses his computer to create and distribute digital images that depict children in a sexually explicit manner. He shares these images via email and social media platforms, and also uses these platforms to entice children into engaging in sexually explicit acts. He also records and shares his own abuse of children.

In this scenario, John Doe is violating Section 67B of The Information Technology Act, 2000. As per this law, on his first conviction, John Doe can be imprisoned for a term that may extend to five years, and be fined up to ten lakh rupees. If he is convicted again, he could face imprisonment for a term that may extend to seven years, and an additional fine up to ten lakh rupees.

However, if John Doe had been sharing material in electronic form that is of interest to science, literature, art, learning, or other objects of general concern, and can prove that the publication of such material is for the public good, he would not be violating this law. Similarly, if the material was used for bona fide heritage or religious purposes, he would not be in violation of this law.
