Explanation using Example
Example 1:
Ravi, a resident of Mumbai, notices a locked suitcase in his neighbor's garage. Believing that the suitcase contains valuable items, Ravi breaks the lock and opens the suitcase. However, the suitcase only contains old clothes. Despite the contents not being valuable, Ravi's act of breaking open the suitcase with the intent to steal or cause mischief falls under Section 461 of the Indian Penal Code. Ravi can be punished with imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both.
Example 2:
Priya, a college student in Delhi, is upset with her roommate, Anjali, over a personal dispute. In a fit of anger, Priya decides to teach Anjali a lesson. She breaks open Anjali's locked drawer, believing it contains her personal diary and other belongings. Priya's intention is to read the diary and cause emotional distress to Anjali. Even though Priya does not steal anything, her act of breaking open the drawer with the intent to commit mischief is punishable under Section 461 of the Indian Penal Code. Priya could face imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both.
