Each of these men acted together with a common intention to commit the crime. Under Section 376D of the Indian Penal Code, all five men are deemed to have committed the offence of gang rape. They are each sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a term of not less than twenty years, which may extend to life imprisonment. Additionally, the court imposes a fine on each of the convicts, which is directed to be paid to Priya to cover her medical expenses and aid in her rehabilitation.
