Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Ravi is convicted of a crime and sentenced to six months in prison. The court decides to include solitary confinement as part of his punishment. According to Section 74 of the Indian Penal Code 1860, Ravi can be placed in solitary confinement for a maximum of seven days in any one month. After each seven-day period of solitary confinement, Ravi must be given at least seven days out of solitary confinement before he can be placed back in solitary confinement. This ensures that Ravi is not subjected to prolonged periods of isolation, which could be detrimental to his mental health.

Example 2:

Sita is sentenced to two months in prison for a minor offense. The court includes solitary confinement in her sentence. According to Section 74, Sita can be placed in solitary confinement for a maximum of fourteen days at a time. After each fourteen-day period, she must be given at least fourteen days out of solitary confinement before she can be placed back in solitary confinement. Since her total imprisonment is only two months, she can only be placed in solitary confinement once for fourteen days, with the remaining time spent in the general prison population.
