Explanation using Example

Imagine a group of five burglars who break into a house with the intent to steal valuable items. During the robbery, one of them gets startled by the homeowner and in a panic, fatally injures the homeowner. Although only one burglar committed the murder, under Section 396 of The Indian Penal Code, all five burglars can be held responsible for the murder and may face the death penalty, life imprisonment, or up to ten years of rigorous imprisonment, in addition to fines, because the murder occurred in the course of committing dacoity (armed robbery).
