Explanation using Example

Imagine a group of five individuals who form an unlawful assembly with the common object of illegally occupying a piece of land. One member of this group, in the heat of the moment, assaults a police officer trying to disperse them. Even though only one person committed the assault, under Section 149 of the Indian Penal Code, all five individuals can be held guilty of the assault as it was an offence committed in prosecution of their common object and it was an act known to be likely to be committed based on their objective.
