Explanation using Example
Imagine a scenario where a person has filed a defamation lawsuit because a newspaper published an article that allegedly harmed their reputation. In this civil case, the character of the person who is claiming damages is relevant to the extent that it may affect the amount of damages awarded. For example, if the person has a generally good reputation, the damages for defamation may be higher as the impact of the defamatory statement might be considered more damaging. Conversely, if the person has a reputation that is not stellar, the damages awarded might be lesser.
