Summary

The Delimitation Act, 2002 was enacted to provide for the delimitation of constituencies for the purpose of elections to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. The Act mandates the formation of a Delimitation Commission every ten years to review the division of territories into territorial constituencies for the purpose of elections and to determine the number of seats to be reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies. The Act also provides for the publication of a draft proposal by the Commission, inviting objections and suggestions from the public, and the final publication of the delimitation order by the Central Government. The Act empowers the Commission to determine the boundaries of constituencies based on the population figures of the census and other relevant factors.
