Explanation using Example

Example 1:

Ravi, a resident of Mumbai, was involved in a physical altercation with another individual, Suresh, in a public park in Mumbai. Suresh filed a police complaint against Ravi for assault. According to Section 177 of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973, the case will be inquired into and tried by a court in Mumbai, as the offence occurred within the local jurisdiction of Mumbai.

Example 2:

Priya, who lives in Delhi, was defrauded by an online seller based in Bangalore. She transferred money to the seller's bank account, but never received the goods. Priya filed a complaint with the Delhi police. However, since the fraudulent act (receiving the money without delivering goods) was committed in Bangalore, the case will be inquired into and tried by a court in Bangalore, as per Section 177 of The Code Of Criminal Procedure 1973.
