Summary

The Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act, 1956 was enacted to provide for the transfer of certain territories from the State of Bihar to the State of West Bengal and vice versa. The act came into effect on 1st November 1956. It was enacted to give effect to the agreement reached between the Governments of Bihar and West Bengal with regard to the transfer of territories, which was signed on 19th August 1956. The Act provides for the transfer of territories in the Purnea, Katihar, and Bhagalpur districts of Bihar to West Bengal, and the transfer of territories in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal to Bihar.
