The Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster (Processing of Claims) Act, 1985, was enacted to provide for a comprehensive and speedy settlement of claims related to the Bhopal gas leak disaster that occurred on the night of December 2-3, 1984, in Bhopal, India. The Act established a claims court to provide a forum for the adjudication of claims arising out of the disaster and set up a scheme for the payment of compensation to the victims. The Act also conferred powers on the central government to take over the management of the Union Carbide India Limited, the company responsible for the disaster, and authorized the government to represent the victims in legal proceedings.
