The All India Council for Technical Education Act, 1987 established the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to provide for the establishment of a council to oversee technical education in India. The AICTE is responsible for the planning, formulation, and maintenance of norms and standards, quality assurance through accreditation, funding in priority areas, monitoring and evaluation, maintaining parity of certification and awards and ensuring coordinated and integrated development and management of technical education in the country. The act empowers the council to regulate and maintain the standards of technical education in the country, and it applies to all institutions, including government, private, and autonomous institutions that provide technical education in India. The act also establishes a grievance redressal mechanism for complaints related to technical education.
